America: an empire

Day Three.

I love American breakfast. Muffins, waffles, bagels, cakes, pastries etc. I’m going to be so fat by the time we get back.

Today we hopped on a bus tour of Washington. I’m telling you it is boggling just how much there is to see. We started making a list of all the things we saw that we should look round and there are about 40 things we want to get through. We won’t.

I didn’t say much today because I didn’t feel there was the need- all my efforts had to go into looking because there was just that much to take in. I had my camera in my hand the whole time and saw something literally every 20 seconds that was worth snapping at. The buildings are just HUGE, and I kept on trying to work out how many of my house you could fit into them. There was embassy, after gallery after institution after monument after musuem. I mean how much time and effort must have gone in to building this city! I can see why people get sucked into wanting to build an empire- because they are beautiful.

The whole place seemed electrically charged with all of the cars and pedestrians- if you looked up you could see all of the office workers in the tall glass buildings on the phone, floors on top of each other. Some of them had their backs to the window which I thought was silly. If I was lucky enough to have an office there I’d spend most of my time just staring out of the window. Maybe people get bored of it? Maybe all the immediate splendour wears off after a while?
